A quick post for a beautiful picture. When I was at Mission San Luis Obispo last week, I saw this beautiful painting as I wandered through their shadowy, poorly curated museum. It was a quick visit because there was a wedding scheduled for the mission church, and their brides have to dress in one of the museum’s back rooms (an even darker room full of Indian pottery). The bride was fussing about a wrinkle on her dress and the bridesmaids, dressed all in black, were trying to console her. But in any case, back to the picture.
I saw it and thought it was extremely beautiful, but like virtually everything else in the museum, it was displayed in near-darkness and had almost no identifying information. “A Nativity Scene, possibly 19th century, artist unknown.” Actually, that was more information than shown for most of the other things on display.
When I got out to the gift shop, however, I found that somebody else had thought it was beautiful, even beautiful enough to use it to make a postcard and a larger print for sale in the gift shop. Still no more identification, but here it is so you too can be wowed by it.
I agree. That is an amazingly beautiful and unusual painting. However, I happen to like small, disorganized museums, etc. They are so refreshingly different from the big tourist traps.
